Why would I write a blog on butter etiquette? Well, I am incensed by the breakfast eating habits of my family member. Why do I care? Well, I am experiencing this feeling every morning when I go to the kitchen to start my day with a breakfast.
My morning breakfast includes a cup of invigorating tea brewed typical Punjabi style and couple of toasts with butter. This is where I encounter the ghastly spectacle of messy ugly crumbs in the butter. Someone obviously dipped the knife in the butter multiple times contaminating the butter with crumbs from his/her toast.

So, I clean the butter by meticulously removing the breadcrumbs and the butter is looking succulently delicious again. I can tell you how therapeutic it is to slash beautifully laid butter with a clean knife, carving a succulent slice of creamy butter, and then spreading it over a dry piece of toast. I feel like I am doing nature a favor by moisturizing the dry arid surface of a pale white toast.
Smooth Layer of Delicious Butter |
These recurring episodes remind me of my colleague David Porterfield. David was from Birmingham in England and we were having breakfast in an upclass hotel in rural England during a company meeting. I was surprised to notice David staring at me as I buttered my toast and then layered orange marmalade on the top. His attention intrigued me to ask why I am getting his attention on my beautifully golden-brown toast buttered to perfection like an art.
David told me that he was watching how I buttered my toast. I asked why? He said, " I was watching that you do'nt dip your marmalade knife back in the butter."
He later told me that his dad is a butler with the royal family and how he judges people based on their butter etiquette. His father told him that he can tell the pedigree of the person by how they butter and eat their toast.

Seriously though, the poor huygene at breakfast table is not a etiquette but a health issue. Leaving bread crumbs in the butter can result in contamination that may induce harmful bacteria and mould over time.
One of my favourite meals of the day is the first meal of the day, breakfast! The breakfast is classed as the most important meal of the day. Those of us who skip it realise that it affects our daily performance. I have personally discovered that on many occasion, if skipped, then by lunch time I struggle with concentration and accuracy of what I am doing.

So, make sure you start the day with a healthy morning breakfast ....
This is so easy: Take as much clean butter from your butter container as you think you'll need and place it on the side of your plate. Add first slice of toast to plate. Butter it. Add second slice on top of first slice. Butter it. Slice and eat. No cross contamination of your clean butter supply. 90-year-old humans still cannot figure this out.
