The region was a continuous cultural and geographic corridor expanding from the Indus Valley civilization to Indo-Gangetic plain. The language may subtly shift today from Punjabi to Haryanvi to Khari Boli (Western Hindi), but there are so much common terminology that indicate a cohesive population. It's hard being the younger sibling, You are always measured against the bar set by your older sibling. Same is true for the young state of Haryana in India. Its trying to create an image of itself in the shadow of its older sibling - Punjab . It has tried painfully to establish itself as anti-Punjab and anti-Sikh state ever since its conception. In fact, Haryana is one of the wealthiest states of India and has the third highest per capita income in the country at $2,100 . The state is one of the most economically developed regions in South Asia, and it has emerged as the largest recipient of government investment per capita in India. Ignoring Haryanvi Culture Over years Haryana governments have made a concerted effort to disassociate themselves from Punjab. Nothing wrong in it, right? Today, the Haryana government in India renamed the city of Gurgaon as "Gurugram". Gurgaon is a city in the Indian state of Haryana located to the south-west of the National Capital Territory of Delhi,(20 mi) and 167 mi southwest of Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab. Although I am in favor of naming of Indian towns to their native names form the names given by the invaders of the country - the Afghans, Mughals, British, and the Portuguese. Most of the current cities and town were created by these invaders who conquered India and established new cities named after them. Why should the Indian public face the embarrassment of remembering their conquerors, plunderers, destroyers and rapists of their cultural and religious heritage, and their dignity?
