Bend it like British Asian Fans of English Soccer - A Satirical Take

FIFA World Cup 2026 Hysteria in USA

We Americans are living through a soccer hysteria at the moment as we are in the middle phase of 2026 FIFA world cup. And why not ... the whole world loves soccer?

I’m just trying to understand why a lot of us are obsessed with the English club football.  I understand the passionate love for sports. But I am genuinely trying to understand why this passionate allegiance for a football club that has nothing to do with you?

British Asians make up around 7% - 9% of the UK population. They practically run the nation’s corner shops, pharmacies, tech sectors, and the government. Yet, on the pitch of the world’s most watched football league, the representation of British Asians hovers somewhere around 0.1%. To put that into perspective, you are statistically more likely to spot a rare albino squirrel riding a unicycle through London than you are to see a British South Asian starting at center-back for Chelsea. How does the love affair with any given club start?

Sikh Fan in English Football League

Everyone wants to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Its a fact that many British Asians attempted to join white clubs during the 1960s and 1970s but they were met with a non-welcoming response, with many being verbally and physically assaulted.

My entire family in UK follows Manchester United as a religious duty. My uncles grew up in Manchester before moving to London in the 1960s. They were first generation immigrants and trying their best to integrate as part of a survival instinct. They learned to curse in perfect Mancunian accents and wear the ManU jersey and scarfs to watch league games over kebab and tandoori chicken grilled by my Masi and Mamis.Once I got in 'big trouble' when I mentioned the banned words - "Liverpool"or "Manchester City".

Manchester United Fans

My cousins still do .. but with pizza and beer. Most follow ManU but some follow Chelsea ... now I am surprised at this choice as Chelsea fans were the most racist of them all in 1908's and I was target of their lager lout behavior once in London Underground.

English Soccer Hooligans - London
The true comedy of the British Asian fan lies in the sheer emotional investment vs. reality. Picture a 20-year-old named Gurpreet from Slough who is a die-hard Manchester United fan. He goes by "Gezzy" at the pub and considers Habeeb Ogunneye, United player of Nigerian descent as 'His brother'. When United lose, Gurpreet falls into a deep, clinical depression. He refuses to eat his dinner. His mother looks at him with utter bewilderment."Beta, why are you crying?" she asks. "Nobody named Singh has ever played that ball ... Eat your daal."
Fan lament Manchester United Loss

But Gurpreet cannot be stopped. He will go online and engage in toxic Twitter warfare with a teenager from Nigeria over whether Habeeb Ogunneye is a British or a Nigerian. The fact that Manchester United  has no British Asian player in their entire squad does not cross his mind. He is united with his white, Black, and Hispanic football brothers in the universal language of soccer\\\he last decade. Data suggests that while American and British boys are playing sports at lower rates, the participation in armchair sports watching on TV and video games have increased considerably. with 61% of teenage boys watch TV sports or play video games daily.

Kids watching TV Sport

Watching sports in TV is good if encourages you to go to a field and play real sports. Its not good when it makes you a "Couch Potato".

How did Our Ancestors Looked Like? Ancient people of Punjab (Punjabi: پنجابی (Shahmukhi), ਪੰਜਾਬੀ (Gurmukhi), पंजाबी (Devanagri), are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group of North Indian origin; which includes parts of Sindh , Punjab , Haryana , and Gujarat . Punjab region has been the location of some of the oldest civilizations in the world, the the Indus Valley Civilization. Excavation of pre-historic sites at Harrapa , Mohenjodaro , Ropar , Dholvira , Kalibangan , and Rakhigarhi reveal an advanced society that may be the cradle of Indian civilization. Map of Indus Valley Civilization Political Controversy on Origin of Indo-Aryans During 19th Century European ethnographers and, of course, most famously, Adolf Hitler , also considered Aryans the master race who had conquered Europe, although the German leader considered them to be of Nordic lineage. Hindu right-wingers believe the source of Indian civilization are the Arya - a nomadic tribe of horse-riding, cattle-rearing warrior...

The Real Story of Heer Ranjha

We all are familiar with Waris Shah (Urdu: السيد وارث علي شاه النقوي الرضوي البهكري البدراني‎) , ਵਾਰਿਸ ਸ਼ਾਹ (Gurmukhi); 1722–1798) who was a Punjabi Sufi poet of Chishti order, renowned for his contribution to Punjabi literature by immortalizing the love story of Heer Ranjha .  His poetic verse is a treasure-trove of Punjabi phrases, idioms and sayings. His minute and realistic depiction of the details of Punjabi life and political situation in the 18th century, remains unique and the entire poem is an album of colorful and enchanting pictures of life in the Punjab, deeply absorbing. Abdur Rehman Chugtai painting of Heer and Ranjha Waris Shah was deeply learned in Sufi and domestic cultural lore. Lost Cities of Punjab - Ancestral Home of Punjabi Communities

Punjabi Ignorance We, the Punjabis historically have not been documenting our own history. The Muslim Punjabis have almost forgotten their genetic ancestry and now try to connect their gene pool to the Arab aristocracy of Sayeds and Qureshis. The Pakistan government ignorantly names its missiles after the Islamic invaders who dispossessed their ancestors from their land. The Hindu Punjabis have written off their own ancestors, warriors kings, and Gurus and relate more to the Middle-India heroes such as Rama, Krishna, and Shivaji, The Sikhs have done a better job in staying connected to their roots but their historical reach is limited just to the Sikh period. Punjab history has to be taken as a whole, and that includes, Adivasis, Indus valley, Aryan Khatris, Kushans, Rajputs, Gujjars, Jatts, Islamic invaders, Sikh period, British rule, and the post independence era. Trinity of Punjabi Pride What's the Problem? So what? The results of this ignorance is astounding. We never ...
