When Sikhs Rescued Maratha Women

Third Battle of Panipat

The Third Battle of Panipat took place on 14 January 1761, at Panipat, about 60 miles north of Delhi between Maratha and the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali, supported by two Indian Muslim allies—the Rohilla Pathans of the Ganga-Jamuna Doab, and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh. The battle is considered one of the largest and bloodiest fought in the 18th century with the largest number of fatalities in a single day.

Slaughter of Marathas

The Marathas, under the command of Sadashiv Rao Bhau, responded to Afghan invasion by gathering an army of between 45,000–60,000, which was accompanied by roughly 100,000 non-combatants, a number of whom were family members desirous of making pilgrimages to Hindu holy sites in northern India.
Slaughter of Marathas in Panipat
The forces led by Ahmad Shah Durrani (Abdali) came out victorious after destroying several Maratha flanks. Most of Maratha leaders like Vilas Rao Bhau, Sadashiv Rao Bhau, Jankoji Scindhia, and Ibrahim Gardi were killed in the battle while the Holker escaped to the safety of Gwalior. The extent of the losses on both sides is heavily disputed by historians, but it is believed that between 60,000–70,000 were killed in fighting, while the numbers of injured and prisoners taken vary considerably.

Reason for Maratha Failure

The main reason for the failure of the Marathas was that they went to war without any allies. They could have received support from Rajputs, Jaats and Sikhs, but none of them supported Marathas in the battle. The Marathas had interfered in the internal affairs of the Rajput states (present-day Rajasthan) and levied heavy taxes and huge fines on them. Their raids in the Jat territory had resulted in the loss of trust of Jat chiefs like Suraj Mal. According to an assessment, the Sikhs were ever ready to co-operate with the Marathas, but Marathas had treated Sikhs, who assisted them earlier in their north-west conquest against Afghans as a non-entity in Punjab affairs. This was because of the flawed diplomacy on the part of Marathas in not recognizing the strategic potential of Sikhs.

The Maratha army was also burdened with over 100,000 pilgrims who wished to worship at Hindu places of worship like Mathura, Hardwar, Kashi, etc. Apart from just fighting the battle, the Maratha troops had the responsibility to protect the non-combatants from Afghans. That was the reason why Marathas suffered heavy losses even after the battle. They could not retreat quickly as they were to protect the non-combatants who were accompanying them.

Maratha Women in traditional attire
Massacre after the Battle

The Afghan cavalry and pikemen ran wild through the streets of Panipat, killing tens of thousands of Maratha soldiers and civilians. The women and children seeking refuge in streets of Panipat were hounded back in Afghan camps as slaves. Children over 14 were beheaded before their own mothers and sisters. Afghan officers who had lost their kin in battle were permitted to carry out massacres of 'infidel' Hindus the next day also, in Panipat and the surrounding area. They arranged victory mounds of severed heads outside their camps. According to the eye-witness chronicles, about 40,000 Maratha prisoners were slaughtered in cold blood the day after the battle.

The unhappy prisoners were paraded in long lines, given a little parched grain and a drink of water, and beheaded... and the women and children who survived were driven off as slaves - twenty-two thousand, many of them of the highest rank in the land.
Indian women traded as sex slaves by Afghans

The Great Rescue

In April 1761, Abdali was returning triumphant having destroyed Maratha power at the third battle of Panipat. His booty included 22,000 Hindu women being taken to Afghanistan to be sold into slavery. On the way they were to be used by the Afghan soldiers to satisfy their lust.

So far, the Sikhs had watched this theater from a distance by not taking any sides in this battle. The Sikhs were at Sarbat Khalksa, their bi-annual meeting at Amritsar when the relatives of the women pleaded for help. They heard of the slaughter of innocent, rapes of women, and capture of more than twenty thousands Maratha women by the afghans. They heard of the fate of their country's  daughters being driven away as Abdali's bounty. Their ire was aroused. All the Khalsa Misls got together and passed a resolution that Abdali is taking Indian women as slaves to his country after plundering the city of Panipat and they will free all the slaves.
Sikh Misls attacking Abdali's Afgan Army
Organizing themselves in small bands, the Sikhs decided to attack the rear of Abdali's army carrying the Indian women as captives. Jassa Singh led the a volunteer force and caught up with the Afghans at the River Sutlej at Goindwal. The Afghans were dismayed at the swiftness and ferocity of Sikh attack. Before they could gather themselves to counter the attack, the Sikhs rescued the Maratha women and carried away much of Abdali's booty.

Most attacks were conducted at midnight when the Afghan troops were sleeping or drunk after late night celebrations. They were caught unprepared and began to dread the midnight as they passed through the plains of Punjab. This started the tales of 12 O' clock which went on to become a joke on the Afghans. Unfortunately, Indian masses have forgotten the significance of 12 O' clock in rescuing captive women from Afghan invaders. Instead it has become a tool to ridicule the brave Sikhs.

The Sikhs rescued many Maratha women who were being carried off to Afghanistan as slaves. Many widows were not accepted back by their families and instead married Sikh soldiers.

Sardar Jassa Singh of Ahluwalia Misl
This action of Sikh Misls required great audacity, swift and faultless execution and a complete indifference to danger. Jassa Singh became a household name in north India for his heroics and was appointed as the "Jathedar" of all Misls at the next Sarbat Khalsa.

Abdali reached the safety of Kabul with a bruised ego and a broken nose. He had to wear a silver mask for the rest of his life to cover his severed nose. He came back to Punjab to avenge this humiliation and massacred thousands of Sikhs and destroyed Harmander Sahib, Amritsar, Sikhs rose again and liberated the Harmander Sahib, hounding Abdali back to his rat hole in Afghanstan.

    1. Appreciate the kind comments. The Sikhs have protected the border for hundreds of years and penetrated up the Khyber Pass to stop any further misadventures from Jehadi marauders.... I think the dirty politics of 1980s and Operation Blue Star did a lot of damage to India's unity. It not only alienated one of the most patriotic community but portrayed them as `anti-national separatists. The result was the loss of the bravest soldiers of Indian Army.

May be she can also tell you how her great grandfather came crying to Sikhs when Afghans were taking his wife to be traded as sex slave in Middle-East. May be this folk song was written about their story - Aayi Baba Daang waaliya, Runn Basra to gayi .... (Come the Sikh Warrior and rescue my wife, the raiders are taking her to Basra slave market).

Basra is city is iraq which is more than 3 thousand kms away from afghanistan.
other thing than that is 12 o'clock was also a myth ,how people in those time knew its 12 o"clock without clock and also 12 O'clock is a 12 hour time notation which is a forein concept to india i dont knew if sikhs used it from time ancient
In india Hindu or jain and buddhist we have a system which divide a day into 4 parahar
as far as i know first clock in india came in 19th century in 1858.
and third myth that 95 to 97 percent (some time 99 %) sacrifies are given Sikhs only.
Fourth Myth if sikhs were not there then all hindus will be finished from india.
if see history the most brutal time for hindus was in the era of Aurangzeb as there were restrisctions of religiuos practises and brutual supresssion of Hindu kings and not masses as there are so many hindu kings who were serving in mughal courts
The claims which you (and almost all sikhs ) made are not historical written by any historian.
i will be happy if you provide any historical proof from books/columns from authors likes of romilla thapar or imran habib or RS sharma.
i liked the Sikhs as a great human beings and sikhism is knowm for its unbiased and secular views and social service towards society

    6. Of course, Basra is in Syria but the Indian slaves were traded from Afghanistan to the middle east markets. The indian clock system was measured in "Pahars" and you are correct that the hour measurements arrived with the Europeans and the term "Ghanta" refers to the bells ringing from the church or clock towers. This however does not take away the fact that Sikhs attacked the Afghan invaders at the middle of the night when they were most unprepared.

Where did you come up with the 95-97% sacrifices? Its historical fact and recorded in history that the 85% of the death sentences were given to the Sikhs by the British during the freedom struggle. You will not be able to deny this.

Hindus suffered a great deal in the hands of invaders from middle-east, Afghanistan, Ujbekistan, and Iran. Their religious freedom and dignity was robbed, temples destroyed, properties looted, and their women molested and treated as easily available commodity. Many compromized by being subservients to their new masters. Many Hindu kings married their daughters to Afghans and Mughals. Infact, the grandmother and great grandmother of Aurangzeb were born in Hindu Rajput families. Mariam-uz-Zamani was daughter of Raja Bharmal of Jaipur and married to the Mughal emperor Akbar. Shah Begum born as Manbhavati Bai, was the daughter of Raja Bhagwant Das, the ruler of Amer. The first wife of Prince Salim better known as the Emperor Jahangir. Jagat Gosain was the consort of Mughal emperor Jahangir and the mother of Shah Jahan. She was the daughter of Raja Udai Singh (popularly known as Mota Raja), the Rathore ruler of Marwar(present-day Jodhpur).

Guru Teg Bahadur stood up against Aurangzeb in support of the religious rights of Hindus and thats why he is called "Hind ki Chader" by the who honor his sacrifice. Now don't try to disclaim this also.

Abdali's marauders killed hundreds of thousands of Maratha and took their young women as captives. The Sikhs rescued about 20,000 of these helpless women but it was unfortunate that may were not accepted back by their families as they had been with the Muslims.

Cheap comments citing lack of documentation does not honor the sufferings of these daughters of India and the barvery of Sikh warriors who risked their lives to rescue them.

    7. Just to update you Arv Singh. Sikhs were with British against India. They fought Wolrd War 2 from British side. and 1857 they were with British. You can google if you have any doubt. So your fact of 85% of death sentences is just nowhere.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:People_executed_by_British_India_by_hanging

By the way there is list of death sentence on wikki. you can count the %. Sikh religion was that religion where Bhai kaniya ji and he never braded they give water and food to Mugal Army too. And so as Guru Gobind singh ji never said to Hindu's that his father sacrified for hindus. Even Sikh was part of Hindus till 1900 then things changed.Even Banda Bairagi was born Hindu who took revenge of Guru's children.Guru Hargobind Sahib daughter Bibi Veero ji saved by a Hindu sangha Purohit.Todar Mal Purchased World costly land for cremation of Sahibjade.Even all sikh and Guru's came from Hindu Families. But Hindu's never tried to degrade Sikhs by bragging such things. No doubt Sikh are brave and did great deeds. But when some coummunity start glory his humman deeds it is not good for them. And for Above article you missed big Part too. When Maratha Helped Sikhs. And it was just 3 year back of this incident.

    8. Yes the Sikhs sided with the British to abolish the tyrant Mughal empire from the red fort. Nishan Sahib should be installed permanently on the red fort to mark the ocassion. After 1857, the Mughal dynasty was finished forever. The British officer William Stephen Raikes Hodson offered the heads of Mughal princes to the Sikh soldiers. Shame on Indians for electing Bahadur Shah Zafar, the grandson of Aurangzeb to lead the mutiny. Did you really expect Sikhs to roll under Zafar?

How about the rest of India siding with the British against the Sikhs during the Anglo-Sikh Wars of 1843-1849? Poorbias, Bengalis, and Rajputs fought alongside the british in five battles against the ikhs. If they sided with the Sikhs, the British influence would have stopped there.

Yeshwant Rao II Holkar was a true patriot and his effort to unite India against the British is respected. I will write a blog on him sometimes as he deserves all respect. Marathas were great warriors and I have utmost respect for Shivaji, and other Maratha leaders.

I just wish the Marathas and Sikhs were able to unite together in 19th century to make a formidable Indian force.

    9. IF Hindu were capable of Fighting Khalsa Force will not come in existence. Hindus were so soft thats why Ghori attacked Delhi 17 times, PrithviRaj Chauhan forgive him 16 time but 17th time he wone and made slave to Chauhan. Hindus have issue they were not united and only Rajput were the Fighters. In Anglo Sikh war you are talking about Poorbias, Bengalis, and Rajputs they were part of British Bengal Army. So dont count them in Indians. They accepted British. Same was Baragadi incident it was not fight for India it was fight for British. And same in Jalianwala Bagh who were shooting bullets (Police guy's), most of them were Hindu/Sikh doing their jobs. All the person who were doing job's under British was accepted the Birtish and lots of Punjabi including Hindu/sikh did in the Gift they were settled in UK and it was around 1910+ and they started dividing Sikh from Hindu's too. That's how Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee born on 1920. Before this Gurudwara's were Temple and managed by Mahant's . Committe removed the Mahants forcefully. Few were killed and few Converted to Sikhism that time and few left. HarMandar Sahib was also written as Hari Mandir Before but now we know as HarMandar Sahib. If i said Even Maharaja Ranjit Singh follow Hinduism most of Sikh will not accepted. But that was the truth if you study you comes to know Maharaja Ranjit singh have More Muslim & Hindu's army than Sikhs. Even his Army Flag was having Sheranwali Mata in it. When he conquered Afganisthan He ordered to give them back the Doors of Somnath Mandir (Gujrat) Which was looted by them a era back. Which was laterly installed on HarMandir Sahib becaz on that time Somnath Mandir was demolished and no where that time.He donated 1 tonne of gold for plating the Kashi Vishwanath Temple's dome. And in his Bill he want to donate Kohenoor to Jagannath Puri Temple. Construction of Hindu Temple Panj Mandir at Fategarh Churian, Gurdaspur and Lakshmi Narayan temple at Dinanagar, Gurdaspur also done by Maharja. In Nutshell the seed what British seeded is having Fruits now. Now Every Sikh want to prove themself away from Hindu's. Which is intigral part of Hinduism Started with making 1 son as Sikh. And even today there more followers in Hindu than Sikh of Guru's. And in India outside Punjab and see how Hindu's Respect Sikhs due to Our Guru's sacrifies. So Rather than pointing on each other Both Community comes together and should work for the betterment of INDIA. And we should follow The 52 Hukams of Guru Gobind Singh ji.

As a Hindu, I fully agree with you that it was a malafide intent of harami Congress and Gandhis to divide ours (Hindu-Sikh) community. Poor Hindus with the bait of money/power etc were lured into committing crimes which Hindu society NEVER approved or supported. Yet, I firmly believe it's failure of overall Hindu society. As you mentioned, I acknowledge that large Sikh population that feels alienated due to the memories. With love and mutual understanding we will heal the wounds and become stronger than ever....We Hindus are forever indebted for the supreme sacrifices made by our Sikh brothers to uphold dharma. Personally I do not see a Sikh and Hindu separately. We are the same. We are both followers of same foundation and ethos which is known as Sanatan(eternal) Dharma..

    3. Its fact that the Sikh women were targeted during the 1984 Genocide but its also reasonable to say that not all Hindus participated in this sin. There are many stories of Hindu families sheltering their Sikh neighbors during those violent three days. I cannot forget the support of our neighbor Mr. Bhatia and his family to us. It was a Congress led pogrom that was executed in all states ruled by Congress. Despite the rule of Congress in Maharashtra, The goons could not target the Sikhs in Bombay and rest of Maharashtra. This was due to the protection given by Shiva Sena led by Bal Thakerey. Whether he did this due to his own conscious or he took protection money from the Sikhs can be debated. Regardless of the reasoning, the Sikhs in Mumbai and Maharashtra were protected and the Congress goons were not able to get to them.

      1) Afghans annihilated Marathas killing hundreds of thousands in battlefield
      2) Marathas were hunted massacred in the city of Panipat and a tower was built from their severed heads
      3) Thousands of Maratha women were taken captive by Abdali's forces as trophies
      4) Sikhs under the leadership of Jassa Singh Ahluwalia attacked the Afghans returning to Kabul via Punjab
      5) Sikhs rescued 20,000 Maratha women from Afghans at 12 O' clock
      6) Families refused the take these unfortunate Maratha women back

Are you denying the history? Or its hurting your Maratha pride to acknowledge the truth of history. Don't be ungrateful to the Sikhs who proably saved your great grandmother from the marauding Afghans.

    2. This statement is historically incorrect. No one came to support the Marathas because their leadership was arrogant and unfriendly to the North Indian allies - Rajputs, Jaats from Haryana, and Sikhs. This arrogance was based on their military superiority and Brahminical approach that looked down on Jaats and Sikhs as inferior.

Please note that Sikhs had assisted Marathas conquer Lahore and attack in 1758. The Sikhs were ever ready to co-operate with the Marathas, but it goes to the discredit of the Marathas that they could not make a proper confederacy with Sikhs due to their caste prejudices.

  17. Originally Sikh community is a Hindu race. They became Sikhs on their Guru's instructions to fight with afgans. As afgans are aware about Hindu religion that cow is considered a sacred animal, they made stand in front in battle ground. Sikh's Gurus, hence introduced five items starting with hindi alphabet 'kai' namely kesh, kanga, Katar etc to fight with them and keep their religious animal in front. Being afgans having big and stout personality, new branch of Sikhs was formed to take equivalent revenge from enemies. Above all God didn't create communities, these are the humans who created caste, community and religion. We should, therefore, pick the best characters from our religious books to follow them

Lost Cities of Punjab - Ancestral Home of Punjabi Communities

Punjabi Ignorance We, the Punjabis historically have not been documenting our own history. The Muslim Punjabis have almost forgotten their genetic ancestry and now try to connect their gene pool to the Arab aristocracy of Sayeds and Qureshis. The Pakistan government ignorantly names its missiles after the Islamic invaders who dispossessed their ancestors from their land. The Hindu Punjabis have written off their own ancestors, warriors kings, and Gurus and relate more to the Middle-India heroes such as Rama, Krishna, and Shivaji, The Sikhs have done a better job in staying connected to their roots but their historical reach is limited just to the Sikh period. Punjab history has to be taken as a whole, and that includes, Adivasis, Indus valley, Aryan Khatris, Kushans, Rajputs, Gujjars, Jatts, Islamic invaders, Sikh period, British rule, and the post independence era. Trinity of Punjabi Pride What's the Problem? So what? The results of this ignorance is astounding. We never ...

His minute and realistic depiction of the details of Punjabi life and political situation in the 18th century, remains unique and the entire poem is an album of colorful and enchanting pictures of life in the Punjab, deeply absorbing. Abdur Rehman Chugtai painting of Heer and Ranjha Waris Shah was deeply learned in Sufi and domestic cultural lore. His depiction of story of romantic love is a poetic expression of the mystical love of the human soul towards God – the quintessential subject in Sufism and a recurring theme in both Sufi and Sikh mysticism. The Legend Heer is an extremely beautiful woman, born into a wealthy fam...
