Rajput Consorts of Mughal Emperors

Rajput Princess for the Mughal Emperrs
The Delhi Sultanate was relatively new in Delhi. Rajputs, the rulers of North India from Punjab to Rajasthan and Delhi had lost most of North and North-West India to the Turkish invaders from Afghanistan. They fought valiantly till the end and their women took their own life to protect their honor. As time passed, Rajputs were becoming increasingly disadvantaged and politically irrelevant. The Moghul Babur from Uzbekistan defeated the Turko-Afghan Sultanate in Delhi and annihilated the last of the Rajput confederacy led by Rana Sanga of Chittor.

Rajputs found an innovative way of reclaiming their political power. Rajput rulers became allies of the Mughals, but at a price. They sent their daughters to the imperial harem for political favors. The practice lasted 150 long years, from 1562 to 1715. The first Rajut princess given to Mughals was Jodha Bai of Amber (Now Jaipur) and the last one was Indira Kanwar of Marwar (Now Jodhpur).

The daughter was obviously nothing more than a pawn in her father's politicking?

Rajput Consort of Humayun

Mah Chuchak Begum (Persian: ماہ چوچک بیگم‎; died 28 March 1564), meaning "Moon flower", was a wife of the second Mughal emperor Humayun. She was daughter of a Rajput King from NW Frontier region as her name clearly indicate Hindu origin. Not much is known about her origin but she was an ambitious lady who ruled Kabul for some time when Humayun was engaged in India.

Rajput Consort of Akbar

Mariam-uz-Zamani (Persian: مریم الزمانی‎, lit. 'Mary of the Age'), (c. 1542 – 19 May 1623) was daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amber and married to the Mughal emperor Akbar. She has also been referred to by several other names, including Hira Kunwar, Harkha Bai, and Jodha Bai.

Mariam-uz-Zamani was born in 1542, the daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amber by his wife Rani Champavati, daughter of Rao Ganga Solanki. Her paternal grandparents were Raja Prithviraj Singh I and Apurva Devi, a daughter of Rao Lunkaran of Bikaner.
Maryam Zamani and Emperor Akbar
The wedding, held in Sambhar, Rajasthan was a political one and was a sign of complete submission of her father to his imperial overlord. The Rajputs of Amber (a very small kingdom in Rajasthan) benefited from this alliance and acquired immense wealth and power. Mariam-uz-Zamani's brother Raja Bhagwan Das became commander of 5,000 cavalry, the highest position available at that time, and bore the proud title Amirul-Umara (Chief Noble). His son, Man Singh I, rose even higher to become commander of 7,000 cavalry.

'Mariam-uz-Zamani' was in fact a title bestowed on her by Akbar on the occasion of their son's birth. Her son was Akbar's successor Jahangir, who turned out t be a religious zealot and prosecuted many Hindus and Sufi saints. He ordered the execution of Sikh Guru Arjan Dev in Lahore.

Rajput Consorts of Jahangir

Shah Begum (Persian: شاہ بیگم‎; c. 1570 - 16 May 1604), meaning 'the royal lady', was a Rajput and the first wife of Prince Salim better known as the Emperor Jahangir.

Born as Manbhavati Bai, she was the daughter of Raja Bhagwant Das, the ruler of Amer. She was the niece of Hira Kunwar who was married to Emperor Akbar, and the mother of Jahangir. Mnbhavati Bai became the mother of Jahangir's first son Khusrau Mirza. On his birth, Manbhavati Bai was given the title of Shah Begum meaning "The royal lady".
Manbhavati Bai with Emperor Jahangir
She was described to be a very beautiful woman. She was a neurotic woman, quick to take offence over imagined insults, for which there was plenty of scope for a Rajput princess in Jahangir's polygamous and predominantly Muslim household. "The lady [Shah Begum] was over ambitious of an ascendancy over the other inmates of the harem, and grew violent at the slightest opposition of her will" said Inayatullah. "From time to time her mind wandered, and her father and brothers all agreed in telling me she was insane," writes Jahangir.

Jagat Gosain (Persian: جگت گوسین‎; died 19 April 1619) meaning 'Mistress of the World', was the consort of Mughal emperor Jahangir and the mother of his successor, the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. She was given the posthumous title of Bilqis Makani.
Jagat Gossain, Consort of Emperor Jahangir
By birth, she was a Rajput princess of Marwar (present-day Jodhpur) and was the daughter of Raja Udai Singh (popularly known as Mota Raja), the Rathore ruler of Marwar and the sister of Sawai Raja Sur Singh, Rathore ruler of Marwar.

After submitting to the Mughals, Udai Singh decided to give his daughter Jagat Gosain in marriage to Akbar's eldest son, Prince Jahangir. Some Rajput nobles did not like the idea of their kings marrying their daughters to the Mughal emperor, as they considered it a sign of humiliation and degradation. The discontent among the nobles gave rise to a rebellion led by Kalyandas Rathore. The rebellion was soon put to an end by Raja Udai Singh after a siege of the Siwana fort and the killing of Kalyandas Rathore.

Jagat Gosain was 12 years old when she was married the 16 year-old Prince Salim (later known as 'Jahangir' upon his accession). Although the marriage was a political one, Jagat gave birth to Jahangir's third son, Khurram ("joyous"), who was to become the future emperor Shah Jahan. After the birth of the son, Jagat Gosai was given the title Taj Bibi, meaning 'crown wife'.

Jagat Gosain lost her husband's favor soon, after the arrival of her arch-rival in the imperial harem, Nur Jahaṇ of Lahore.  After her death, Jahangir ordered that she be called Bilqis Makani ("the Lady of Pure Abode")

Rajput Consort of Aurangzeb

Rahmat-un-Nissa (Persian: رحمت النساء بیگم‎) (died c. 1691) also known by her maiden name Nawab Bai, was a secondary wife of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. There are conflicting accounts of Nawab Bai's parentage but she was a Hindu who married Aurangzeb in 1638 as part of a political alliance. She gave birth to Aurangzeb's first two sons, including Bahadur Shah I, who became emperor in 1707.
Rahmat-un-Nissa or Nawab Bai
Aurangzeb whose grandmother and great grandmother were from Hindu Rajput, went on to become most radical Mughal Emperor and a fetish for converting Hindus by force to Islam. Some sources quote Nawab Bai as the daughter of Rajput Raja af the Rajauri in Jammu. When Shah Jahan demanded a tribute of money, the Raja sent him this granddaughter, Nawab Bai, who was noted for her beauty, goodness and intelligence. Although she had given birth to Aurangzeb's first son, still his first wife, the Persian princess, Dilras Banu Begum, remained Aurangzeb's chief consort.

Rajput Consort of Shah Azam

Rahmat Banu Begum (Persian: رحمت بانو بیگم‎; born c. 1656), was the princess of Kingdom of Assam and one of the wives of Mughal Emperor Muhammad Azam Shah.
Rahmat Banu Begum or Nangchen Gabbaru of Assam
Her real name was Nangchen Gabharu and she was the only daughter of Swargadeo Jayadhwaj Singha, king of Assam from Ahom Dynasty. She famously resisted Assam King's submissive plan to hand over Guwahati to the Mughals.

When Mughal general Mir Jumla defeated Jayadhwaj in the war, he made a truce with Mir Jumla on a condition for which his daughter Nangchen Gabharu had to be sent to the Mughal harem when she was only six. Her father delivered her at Aurangzeb's court on 15 January 1663. She was given the Muslim name of Rahmat Banu Begum after her conversion to Islam, and was brought up in the imperial harem. Five years later, she was formally married to Aurangzeb's son Muhammad Azam Shah on with a dowry of 1,80,000 rupees at Delhi.

Rajput Consort of Jahandar Shah

Imtiaz Mahal Persian: امتیاز محل; meaning "distinguished one of the palace") better known by her birth name Lal Kunwar (Hindi: लाल कुंवर) was the Empress of the Mughal Empire as the wife of Mughal Emperor Jahandar Shah. She was a former dancing girl who exercised supreme influence over the Emperor, encouraged frivolity and pleasure which eventually led to his ignominious downfall.
Lal Kunwar or Imtiaz Begam

Rajput Consort of Farrukhsiyar

The last incidence of a Mughal-Rajput marriage is particularly unsavory; it belongs to an era when the Mughal power had precipitously declined. In 1715, Indira Kanwar was born as Marwar Princess, the daughter of Maharaja Ajit Singh of Jodhpur. Ajit Singh was compelled to marry off his daughter Indira Kanwar to Emperor Farrukhsiyar. The Maharaja hated  his Mughal son-in-law and was instrumental in Farrukhsiyar's dethronement and assassination. She left the harem after her husband's death and returned to her father's household. She converted back to Hinduism before her death.. It was the first ever instance of a Rajput princess being "restored to her own people after she had once entered the imperial harem."
Indira Kanwar of Jodhpur
She was the grand daughter of Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Jodhpur. She was also related to Taj Bibi Bilqis Makani, daughter of Raja Udai Singh, the mother of the \Mughal Emperor Shah Jahangir.

Rajput Consort of Mohammad Shah Rangila

Qudsia Begum (died 1765), was a wife of Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah and mother of emperor Ahmad Shah Bahadur. She was born of Hindu Rajput origin with her initial name being Udham Bai. She was first introduced to the Imperial Court as a dancer/entertainer after a conquest. The emperor Muhammad Shah eventually grew fond of her and took her as his third wife. She was later appointed as a Mansabdar, a high ranking position of authority.

After Muhammad Shah's death in 1748, her son Ahmad Shah Bahadur (1725–1775) became emperor. As a widow, she took the title Qudsiya Begum.

  1. Great information! I have rajput friends who totally deny the fact that the Mughals and Rajputs even had marital relations. But I can understand why they would say something like that.. haha ego issues
Sir I have a question for you, Where do the Rajputs come from? Are they really the offsprings of kings or the reality is different? I read Sri Dasam Granth ji and as far as I can remember it said that Janamejaya had three sons and one of his son was from a maid servant and he was called Ragiputra (Ajay Singh) later on who ever married there daughters to him were called rajputs. Please shed some light over there history.

    1. Rajputs are warriors clans from NW India but they are not Kshatriya (Khatri). When Kshatriya power was diminished after Mahabharata, a new group of warriors entered Punjab and later in NW India. Brahmins anointed them as sons of Kshatriya after running a fire ceremony or Yagya on Mount Abu, Rajasthan, The fire of the Yagya purified the newcomers came t be known as Rajputs. Their origin is from the steppes of central asia and they are related to Scythians and included a mixed group of migrants.

    1) And then who are the Rajputs that Dasam Granth is talking about?
    2) Who was this person named Ajay Singh and is he talked about in other scriptures?
    3) is the word Rajput derived from raajiputra?
Sorry if my questions sound bit controversial but You seem like someone who knows what he is talking about and will provide me with a non biased answer. Can I have your email? I also had other questions and if you don’t feel comfortable sharing this info I totally understand.

BUT DO YOU KNOW THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE IS THAT MUGHALS USED THESE WOMEN AS A SOURCE OF PLEASURE AND A MACHINE TO PRODUCE CHILDREN... BUT RAJPUTS ON THE OTHER HAND RESPECTED THEM AND GAVE THEM EQUAL PLACE AS THEIR OTHER RANIS... MUGHAL HAREM...

    6. Mr Jiya, your comments come from a lot of emotion. Rajputs are indeed the honored warriors of Indian society. Their contribution and sacrifices must be respected by all patriotic Indians. Who can forget great warriors like Bappa Rawal who defeated the Arabs and the West Punjab city of Rawalpindi is dedicated in his memory, Raja Anangpal of Lahore, Rana Sangha, Alha-Udal, Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan, Maharana Pratap, and so many other countless warriors to name a few. Sacrifice of Rajput women is also worth mentioning starting from Rani Padmini and hundreds others who chose to die in Jauhar and not be captured by marauding invaders. In fact Chamkaur Garhi the fortress from where Guru Gobind Singh waged a successful battle against Mughals was offered to him by a Rajput chief. We bow our head in respect for the supreme sacrifices of Rajput warriors and Rajput women.

But we have to be fair and honest about history. Many Rajput chiefs survived by forging matrimonial alliances with Mughals. In fact they were the reason why Mughals were able to rule over India for hundreds of years. Not a single Rajput Raja fought against the British also. We must state that these coward Rajputs do not represent the brave Rajput people. People do embarrassing things for survival.

I have written an unbiased blog on this topic, Please read this and post your comments again. Link: https://malicethoughts.blogspot.com/2017/04/rajput-history.html?sc=1654122598574

His son Anandpal fought bravely all his life. The cities of Rawalpindi (Rawals), Sialkot (Sials), Gujranwala, (Gurjara Prathara) Bhatinda (Bhatti) and Pathankot (?) were centers of Punjabi Rajputs. It was A Rajput chief who gave Chamkaur, his Garhi to Guru Gobind Singh ji to make a stand against the Mughals. Even the Sikh royal family of Patiala are offshoot from Bhattis of Jaisalmer. This article was primarily focused on the Rajputs kingdoms of Rajasthan who made a deal with the Mughals, with exception of Maharan Pratap.

Lets not forget Chaudhary Jagat Singh, a rajput who gave his Garhi (fortess) to Guru Gobind Singh ji to take a stand against the Mughals.

    1. It hurts that bad? The meaning of Mah Chuchak Begam in Sanskrit is "The great nipple sucker". As the name is Sanskrit based and not Pashto or Persian, its is self explanatory that Mah Chuchak Begum was from a Hindu family. The tirle "Begum" means wife of a Muslm of aristocratic status.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a Sandhawala Jatt and not a Shahjehani Jaat as you mistakenly mention. He infact had maany Muslim and Hindu Rajput wifes and concubines. His muslim consorts include, Moran Sarkar and Gl Bahar. His Hindu Rajput consorts included, Mehtab Devi, also known as Guddan and Raj Banso, the two daughters of Raja Sansarchand of Kangra. Both sisters committed Sati on his funeral as per Rajput tradition.

    1. Thanks for your comments .... The objective of my blog was to share the historical fact of matrimonial alliances between certain Rajput clans and Mughals, Its in no way disrespectful towards the entire Rajput community. You will agree with me that a vast majority of Rajputs sacrificed their all in the fight against the Islamic invaders, Rajput women also gave their sacrifices. Full respect to them all with my heart.

But then there were other Rajput chiefs who sold their soul to the devil, for example Raja Jaychand of Kannauj who invited Ghori to India, Jaipur clan who married their daughters to the Mughals and became an instrument of suppression of Indian people - Raja Jai Singh sided with Mughals against Shivaji, Himachali Rajas joining Aurangzeb against Guru Gobind Singh, and Raja Chhatrasal joining Bahadurshah against Banda Singh Bahadur. The treachery and treason of these handful Rajput chiefs should not be used to malign the brave community of all Rajputs. History is harsh sometimes but TRUTH always prevails.

She was sent to the Mughal harem as part of the Treaty of Ghilajharighat in 1663 and was renamed Rahmat Banu Begum . She was the only daughter of Chaopha Sutamla, king of Ahoms and his wife Pakhori Gabharu, the daughter of Momai Tamuli Borbarua. She was the niece of Lachit Borphukan and Laluksola Borphukan. The Real Story of Heer Ranjha

We all are familiar with Waris Shah (Urdu: السيد وارث علي شاه النقوي الرضوي البهكري البدراني‎) , ਵਾਰਿਸ ਸ਼ਾਹ (Gurmukhi); 1722–1798) who was a Punjabi Sufi poet of Chishti order, renowned for his contribution to Punjabi literature by immortalizing the love story of Heer Ranjha .  His poetic verse is a treasure-trove of Punjabi phrases, idioms and sayings.
